On his deathbed, Columbus still believed that he had, in fact reached the East coast of Asia.Ships Passenger Lists to U.S.A. In all, Columbus made four round trips to the Americas. Because of the loss of the "Santa Maria ", Columbus was forced to leave 39 crew and supplies at La Navidad to await his return. The ship was disassembled and the timbers used to build a fortress in the first Spanish settlement, La Navidad (now Mole Saint-Nicholas ). The expedition travelled via the Canary Islands, to the Bahamas, made landfall in Haiti, ( Hispaniola or Isla Espanola) on Christmas Day ,1492, but the "Santa Maria" finally ran aground at Cap Haitien. King Ferdinand granted amnesty to convicts who would sign up for the voyage, but only 4 did so, and became part of the crew. Some of the 40 crew came from Andalusia ,but many crew members were experienced sailors who came from around the port town of Palos and coastal Galicia. It was recognised that the earth was round, but Columbus expected a distance of 3700 km. This trade at that time meant a long hazardous eastward sea voyage, or equally hazardous land travel via the Silk Road. The purpose of the voyage was to find a short route to the East Indies to permit Spain to dominate the lucrative "spice ' trade. The expedition was backed by King Ferdinaind and Queen Isabella of Spain ,and financed by a syndicate of 7 Genovese bankers resident in Seville. The "Santa Maria" had a simple single deck and 3 masts, foremast and main masts square rigged ,and the mizzen mast with a lateen rig, a small square sail on the bowsprit, and small topsail above the mainsail on the mainmast.Ĭhristopher Columbus was an Italian who sailed under the Spanish flag. None of the three ships were in pristine condition. She was the largest of the 3 ships, the "Santa Maria ", "Pinta ',and "Nina",which comprised the fleet which set sail to discover the New World. She was fitted out for the expedition at El Puerto de Santa Maria, on the mouth of the Guadalete River on the Bay of Cadiz, and then named after the town. The "Santa Maria" was originally named "La Gallega" because she was built in Pontevedra, Gallicia, but has also been known as "Marigalante" ,and in the writings of Bartolome de las Casas as " La Capitana " and "La Nao". Her tonnage is contentious variously attributed as 200-600 tons.

Notes The " Santa Maria de la Immaculada Concepcion ", usually shortened to "Santa Maria" was originally a small carrack or "nao" merchant vessel listed as capable of carrying 100 toneladas of wine (equivalent to 100 tons).
